Abstract

1,195,052. Sterilizing apparatus. R. E. PICKSTONE. 13 March, 1968 [16 March, 1967], No. 12419/67. Heading A5G. Apparatus for sterilizing articles, especially surgical instruments, comprises a vessel 12 with a heater 14 and a thermally insulating jacket 13 at the lower end, a section 10 above having cooling fins 16, and an uppermost flared section 11 in which is an entry door 21 and means whereby the articles to be sterilized are lowered into the lower vessel, so that they are sterilized by immersion in a boiling liquid and/or vapour at a temperature above 160‹C., including driving gear 26 and guides 22 on which a tray or the like may travel up and down the vessel. After sterilization, the sterilized articles are raised to the top of the chamber and left to allow the sterilant to he evaporated by the heat of the articles before they are removed. A thermostat 28 in the vapour zone, a switch actuated by the opening and closing of the door 21 and a timer are used to effect automatic control of the sterilizing process.
