Abstract
1,195,047. Purification of acetone. MITSUBISHI CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 29 Aug., 1967 [31 Aug., 1966], No. 39509/67. Heading C2C. A process for the purification of crude acetone (manufactured by the oxidation of propylene in the presence of a catalyst containing a salt of a metal of the platinum group and a halide of a heavy metal which possesses at least two valency states) comprises pre-treating the crude acetone to remove by-products of lower boiling- point, and then distilling the crude acetone in a rectifying column to recover acetone from the top of said column while by-products of higher boiling-point are removed from the bottom of said column, in which distillation step the acetone vapour ascending in the rectifying column is counter-currently contacted with an alkali-containing acetone liquor in the upper part of the column. A side-stream comprising halogen-containing by-products is withdrawn from a mid-part of the column. The catalyst preferably contains palladium chloride and copper chloride, whilst the alkali in the alkalicontaining acetone liquor is an alkali metal carbonate and/or alkali metal hydroxide.
