Abstract

1,194,651. Harvesters. HESSTON CORP. Inc. 15 Jan., 1968 [9 Aug., 1967], No. 2223/68. Heading A1F. A sickle guard 10 in combination with a sickle bar 28 includes a pair of spaced shoe members 18 and a corresponding pair of spaced plate members 20 mounted on bar 12, a reciprocable sickle 24 being received in the space 46 and the members 18, 20 interlock at their forward ends. The sickle 24 comprises a continuous row of side by side knife sections 26 with bevelled edges 32 secured to sickle bar 28. The shoe members 18 have spaced fingers 36 each of which have a bed 46 on which the sickle 24 rests and a transverse groove 50 which clears the sickle bar 28. The fingers 36 are integrally connected at their rear ends by bridges 52, 54 and transverse rib 56 which abuts against the bar 12 and defines the back of the space 46. The plate members 20 have a similar shape to the shoes 18 and lie on top of the blades 26 and with the shoes are secured to bar 12 by nuts and bolts 14, 16. The forward end of the plate member slots into the groove 65 in the forward end of the shoe. The strips 62 which form the forward part of the plate members have shearing edges 66 which co-operate with blades 26 during the cutting of the crop. In a modification, the sickle guards (110), Figs. 7, 9 (not shown), receive a pair of reciprocating sickles (124a), (124b) having knife sections (126a), (126b), the sickles being reciprocated simultaneously and in opposite directions.
