Abstract

1,194,324. Controlling hydraulic variable-ratio gears. JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd. 1 Sept., 1967 [23 June, 1966], No. 28141/66. Heading F2D. In a motor vehicle hydrostatic transmission, e.g. of the type described in Specification 1,117,785, including an engine-driven variable displacement swashplate pump driving a fixed displacement swashplate motor, a pump displacement control servo 9 is actuated in accordance with engine accelerator pedal 29 position and the pressure in the main fluid line from the pump to the motor. The input member of servo 9, movable leftwards and rightwards from a central neutral position to increase pump displacement from zero for forward and reverse drive respectively, is pivoted at 40 to an arcuate slotted lever 21 having a fixed pivot 22. Accelerator pedal 29 is connected via a push rod 28, a compression spring 26, and a link 24, to a lever 18 having a fixed pivot 23. A link 16, pivoted at 17 to the lever 18 and having a pin 19 engaging the slot 20 of lever 21, is positioned by a manual forward-neutral-reverse selector 11 so that the pin 19 engages one end of the slot 20, as shown, for forward drive, the other end for reverse, and the centre, with pin 19 and pivots 22, 17 in alignment, for neutral. A member 42 on link 16 engages a surface 43 of lever 21 at the neutral position to lock the lever 21. An arm 33 on lever 21 is engaged by plungers 34, 35 acted upon by fluid pressure in the supply and return lines respectively of the transmission. A spring 31 counteracts the effect of reversal o pressures during overrun,. During forward drive, depression of the pedal 29 urges lever 21 anticlockwise to increase pump displacement and supply line pressure on plunger 34 urges lever 21 clockwise. In reverse, pedal 29 depression urges lever 21 clockwise to increase pump displacement and supply line pressure on plunger 35 urges it anticlockwise. Pump displacement is limited in reverse. The lever system may be connected electrically to the servo 9.
