Abstract
1,194,089. Headsets. L. R. KAHN. 25 Sept., 1968 [3 Oct., 1967], No. 45493/68. Heading H4J. A headset includes a mercury switch operative in response to tilting movement of the head. A headset 10 (Fig. 1) has two mercury switches 16, 16 responsive to tilting to disconnect or connect receiver circuits. With the headset upright is tilted so that earphone 12 is lower the receiver circuits are disconnected from the earphones 12, 12<SP>1</SP> and the user is substantialy isolated from environmental noise. With the headset tilted so that earphone 12<SP>1</SP> is lower the receiver circuits receive intelligence from microphones 18, 18<SP>1</SP>. A monaural system (not shown) employs a single tilt switch and the output is fed to one or two earphones. Radio input circuits 26, 26<SP>1</SP> and the tilt switches 16, 16<SP>1</SP> may alternatively be arranged so that the wearer hears one circuit with his head tilted in one direction and the other circuit with his head tilted in the other direction. The switches may be angularly adjusted by movement of a pivotal mounting plate 29, 29<SP>1</SP> (see Fig. 1a, not shown). A two-way communication system (Fig. 2) has a mercury switch 60 to connect the receiver circuit 58 to the earphones when the headset 50 is level or tilted in one direction. When tilted in the other direction the transmitter circuit 62 is connected to the microphone 56 by mercury switch 64 and the receiver circuit 58 is disconnected. Set-screws 68, 70 allow either or both the transmitter or receiver circuit to be activated when the headset 50 is level.
