Abstract

1,193,822. Polymerization with high energy electrons. T.I. (GROUP SERVICES) Ltd. 15 June, 1967 [18 June, 1966], No. 27313/66. Heading C3P. [Also in Division H1] Polymeric and monomeric materials are treated in a continuous process to cause therein free radical combination chain reactions to produce polymerization, graft polymerization, co-polymerization, and/or crosslinking by passing the material M in a linear path at a substantially uniform rate past at least four mutually spaced beams of high energy electrons with intervals therebetween, all the beams having the same order of energy, so that the material is exposed to at least four successive doses of radiation of the same order of energy, the duration of each dose being shorter than the time interval between successive doses and the speed of travel being such that the time intervals between successive doses are greater than the half-lifetime of the freeradicals initiated in the material by the action of the electrons. Preferably as shown in Fig. 2, all the beams lie on one side of the path of the material M and the material is in the form of a flat strip. The material may be in the form of a liquid coating on a manufactured material and may comprise a blend of a polymer with a cross-linking monomer. Preferably the polymer is a polyester and the monomer is styrene.
