Abstract
1,193,681. Moulding articles having a delustered finish; laminates; films. FMC CORP. 15 March, 1967 [18 April, 1966], No. 12226/67. Headings B5A, B5B and B5N. Articles having a delustered finish are moulded in contact with a releasable film of cellulosic material which contains finely divided particles made of a material containing a major proportion of #-1,4-glucan or a derivative thereof. The film may be retained upon the article after moulding and stripped off immediately before use or the film may be removed directly after moulding. Articles such as table tops, countertops, and radio or television cabinets may be made. The film may be used to line a conventional mould or may be used unsupported. In one embodiment a fibre reinforced polyester panel is made by sandwiching a resin soaked fibre mat between two releasable films, bounding the mat with a hoop frame and heating the assembly to cure the polyester. In an alternative embodiment, a continuous fibre-resin mat is sandwiched between a releasable film of the above type and a conventional cellulosic film, consolidated by passage through rollers, and finally heat hardened, the films being removed prior to use. The film may be made by dispersing the particulate material in water, thoroughly mixing the dispersion with viscose, and subsequently extruding the mixture into a coagulating bath. The extruded film is finally passed through a bath containing a plasticizing agent, such as glycol or glycerol, and, if required an anchoring agent such as melamine-formaldehyde.
