Abstract

1,193,511. Cheques fraud preventing. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. 21 June, 1968 [21 June, 1967], No. 28748/67. Headings B6A and B6C. A cheque blank for use in the GIRO system has an area which is printed with a radiation sensitive printing ink and which when exposed to irradiation by an electron beam changes in colour. The cheque blank is provided with a rectangular panel which is imprinted with the readiation sensitive printing ink composed of a halogen containing polymer, e.g. polyvinyl chloride or polyvinylidene chloride and an acid sensitive dye such as di-ethyl yellow. To authenticate the cheque blank it is exposed to a scanning beam of electrons from an accelerator operating at 150-300 kV, the pattern of scanning being designed to produce wavy patterns that are found on bank notes. Interposed between the beam and the cheque blank is a mask bearing a date in characters which are opaque to the radiation. The radiation area shows a pattern of wavy lines in red surrounding the date in yellow. The authenticated cheque is voided by exposure to ultra-violet light light from a lamp for a predetermined period of time to cause a breakdown of the polymer and to release enough hydrogen chloride to turn the whole panel red, which is protected against ordinary ultra-violet light by a layer opaque to it.
