Abstract

1,193,441. Photo-electric distance measurement. R. WAGNER. 12 July, 1967 [13 July, 1966], No. 32030/67. Heading H4D. In a photo-electric system for measuring the distance between two points, apparatus at each point includes means for modulating the light transmitted to the other point, the modulation frequencies differ such that a beat frequency is generated at each point, at one point the phases of the beat frequencies are compared, and at each point the received energy is modulated in a constant phase at the modulation frequency of the respective transmitter before passing to a detector. Each apparatus may employ a combined transmitter-receiver modulator utilizing an ultrasonic standing wave. The transmission of the beat frequency phase to the measuring point may be by auxiliary modulation.
