Abstract

1,193,426. Valves. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP. 6 Sept., 1967 [5 July, 1966], No. 30197/66. Heading F2V. A butterfly valve member for pivotal mounting in a fluid conduit, has opposite surfaces on each of which is disposed a respective flange or projection 42, 43, each of which has a bluff surface facing away from the centre of the valve member, the flanges or projections, in operation at least throughout a substantial range of angular positions of the valve member, modifying the fluid pressure distribution over the said surfaces to reduce the torque in a closing sense which is exerted on the valve member by the fluid. As shown, the flanges are diametrically spaced apart on opposite sides of the pivot axis, and are disposed at the perpihery. Each flange may extend throughout a minor portion only of the periphery. The valve member may be cambered as at 41, 41 to further modify the pressure distribution. The pivot axis may be inclined to the median plane.
