Abstract

1,193,354. Making parallel wire strand. BETHLEHEM STEEL CORP. 25 Aug., 1967 [25 Aug., 1966], No. 39163/67. Heading D1T. To make a parallel-wire strand, Fig. 3, such that the strand has the minimum tendancy to twist or coil, a number of the wires 19 are drawn from turntables 11 that rotate clockwise and a substantially equal number of wires 21 are drawn from turntables 13 that rotate anticlockwise, the wires being assembled in parallel relationship and secured against movement by individual binding means 128 at at least two longitudinally spaced points. In this manner the wires are divided into groups, each group having a natural tendancy to curve in a direction opposite to another group. In Fig. 3 the groups of wires are drawn through a series of lay plates 27, 29, 31, 32 arranging the wires into a hexagonal shape. Thereafter the wires pass through roller discs 33, 47 and roller discs (49), (50) and (51). Fig. 1 (not shown), and is bound at intervals with a securing material 128 at binding stations located between the roller dies. The cable then passes through a moving clamp 53, Fig. 5, over a roller table 163 and a traverse device 161 to a large take-up drum 159. To prevent overstressing and kinking of the strand as it is wound onto the drum 159, the strand is rotated or allowed to rotate in alternate directions about its own axis through a range of approximately 270 degrees as it is reeled. In addition the securing material 28 is such that it will stretch sufficiently to allow the strand to open up as it is reeled, but not sufficiently to allow the wires in the strand to become a loose bundle. The securing material 28 may be a rayon-reinforced plastic tape wherein a rayon yarn or filament reinforcing is mounted in acetate or polyester film matrix, with a rubber resin backing providing adhesion.
