Abstract
1,193,335. Polymerizing episulphides. DUNLOP CO. Ltd. 10 July, 1968 [18 Aug., 1967], No. 38153/67. Heading C3R. A catalyst for the polymerization of episulphides comprises a polyamine in which the amino groups are linked by a divalent organic radical and in which at least one amino nitrogen atom has an appendant alkyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl or aryl group or forms part of a ring with another amino nitrogen atom. The divalent organic group is preferably an aliphatic hydrocarbon group but may be aromatic or aliphatic-aromatic. It may be substituted, e.g. by ether or imino groups. Specified catalysts are Me 2 NCH 2 CH 2 NHMe; MeNHCH 2 CH 2 NHMe; Me 2 NC(NH)NMe 2 (tetramethyl guanidine) ; Me 2 NCH 2 CH 2 NHCH 2 CH 2 NHMe; Me 2 NCH 2 - CH 2 NMe 2 ; Me 2 NCH 2 CH 2 NH(C 6 CH 4 )O(C 6 H 4 )NHCH 2 CH 2 NHMe; N-methyl piperazine; and 1,4- diazobicyclo-(2.2.2)-octane. Examples of episulphides include the alkylene sulphides, unsaturated episulphides and di-episulphides. Polyethylene sulphides are obtained having molecular weights up to 2À5 x 10<SP>6</SP>.
