Abstract
1,193,301. Coated materials. T.R.W. Inc. 28 Feb., 1967 [2 March, 1966], No. 9398/67. Heading B2E. [Also in Divisions B5 and C3] Reinforcing materials such as silica cloth and carbon cloth are impregnated with a composition comprising a mixture of a polyfunctional diene prepolymer having at least 50% of its olefinic unsaturation in the form of pendant vinyl groups on alternate carbon atoms of an elongate backbone chain, a polyfunctional organic chain extender capable of reacting therewith, and a peroxide free radical initiator capable of curing the mixture to a hard resin. Suitable diene prepolymers are from 1,2-polybutadiene, 1,2-polyisoprene, and 3,4-polyisoprene. The functional groups on the prepolymer are hydroxyl, amino, or carboxyl groups and the chain extender is a polyisocyanate, polybasic acid, anhydride, or acid chloride, epoxy compound, imine, or imide. The first reaction is chain extension to form an elastomeric matrix having the peroxide dispersed therethrough. On further heating the mixture cures, perhaps by cyclization. The two reactions may occur simultaneously.
