[Also in Divisions C4 and C7] Aluminium powder or paste is made by grinding, e.g. in a ball mill, the aluminium in an organic solvent and up to 3% by weight, based on the starting material, of at least one acidic anionic wetting agent which is reactive with freshly ground aluminium, removing the excess wetting agent by washing and adjusting the solids concentration, as by evaporating the solvent, to that desired. The organic solvent may be mineral spirits, aromatics, esters, ethers, ketones and alcohols. After grinding the mud is diluted with further solvent and centrifuged or pressed. The wetting agent may be at least one of sulphated fatty acids, fatty alcohols, alkyl-, aryl-, aralkyl-sulphonates, alkane sulphonates, polysulphonates, polysulphonates linked with ester or amide radicals and condensates thereof with ethylene oxide or propylene oxide. The wetting agents form salts with the newly-formed surface of the aluminium. Such a layer prevents oxidation of the underlying surface. To make a paste there is added to the ground mass 1-6% by weight based on the mass of an oil soluble non-ionic or ampholytic wetting agent of substantially neutral pH and suitable for creating an aqueous emulsion.
