Abstract
1,192,517. Welding by pressure. DYNAMIT NOBEL A.G. 20 June, 1968 [21 June, 1967], No. 29554/68. Heading B3R. A method of explosively bonding the surfaces of two metal members wherein the space between the members when the explosive is detonated or a region of the space adjacent those parts of the surfaces to be bonded first is filled with a gas or gaseous mixture having a sound propagation velocity higher than that of air. Two metal plates 1, 2 are arranged at an angle to one another leaving a space 3 which is filled with hydrogen or helium and the explosive 2 is arranged on the upper member 2. The assembly may be enclosed in a synthetic plastic bag filled with the required gas. Alternatively three sides of the plates may be sealed with adhesive tape and the required gas is caused to flow through holes in the tape on the igniting side to displace air from between the plates. The air may be displaced completely, or if a partial sealing of the fourth side is provided, into positions remote from the igniting side.
