Abstract

1,192,466. Substituted quinones and hydroquinones. EASTMAN KODAK CO. 1 Sept., 1967, No. 40104/67. Heading C2C. [Also in Division G2] 2 - (Omega - carboxypentyl) - 5 - methyl hydroquinone is prepared by refluxing methylhydroquinone with monethyl adipate in the presence of borontrifluoride and poured into water. 5 - (2,5 - Dihydroxy - 4 - methylbenzoyl) pentanoic acid is extracted from the aqueous layer and the ethyl ester extracted from the organic layer with ether. The ethyl ester is refluxed with acetic acid to produce 5-(2,5-dihydroxy-4-methylbenzoyl)-pentanoic acid. The acid is now reduced with palladium to produce the desired hydroquinone. 2 - (Omega - carboxypentyl) - 5 - methyl quinone is prepared by oxidation of the hydroquinone with sodium chlorate. Hydroquinones of formula and p-quinones of formula where R and R 2 are alkylene or arylene, R 1 is hydrogen or R 1 and R 2 together complete a benzene ring and X is hydrogen, carboxyl or acyloxy provided that no more than one X is hydrogen may be similarly prepared.
