Abstract
119,226. Polis, S. N. Sept. 17, 1917, [Convention date]. Frames and framing; hulls; skins; concrete vessels.-A steel or concrete framework or skeleton to support the steel, cmcrete, or wood skin or shell of a ship comprises longitudinal truss or plate girders 17, Figs. 3, 4, and 8, preferably two. and similar trarxsvease girders 18 extending between them and outwards therefrom, as cantilevers, to the sides. In this way substantially all the stresses upon the hull are borne by the skeleton. The shell plating 26 is formed with transverse ribs thereon, the end ribs being united, as by welding or riveting, in conjunction with the transverse girders. Figs. 4 and 8 show transverse sections of a form giving a minimum of rolling; the angles 28 at the sides may be rounded, and there may be a flat deck with shallow vertical sides. The propelling mechanism may comprise two propellers 39, 43, Fig. 12, located in tunnels on oppositely directed shafts; the .propeller 39 works amidships in a recess 44 accessible for repairs by a well 45a from above deck. Centreboards 36, Fig. 3, capable of being withdrawn into housings by cables, are located in various positions. In Fig. 12 a centre-board 37 is shown at the bow to hold the ship against side slipping and facilitate manoeuvring in conjunction with the rudder. To facilitate steering in heavy weather the rudder 46 can be lowered to the position shown in dotted lines 48 by a cable 49 from a dechhouse 16<a>. The rudder comprises top and bottom angles 50, 51, pivoted to the rudder post, with spaced sections 46 pivoted between them. These sections close up when the rudder is lowered. The top and bottom angles may be replaced by plates with the sections 46 omitted, the plates sliding edge to edge as they are raised and lowered. These ships may be formed with double bottoms and decks and with tank holes for carrying oil. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 19077/13.
