Abstract

1,192,063. Removing oil from water. OMYA S.A. 5 June, 1968 [15 May, 1967], No. 22453/67. Heading C1C. Water polluted on its surface with oil or oil derivatives is treated by application of a mineral powder which has been treated to render it hydrophobic or more hydrophobic, whereby an agglomerate of the powder and the oil or oil derivative, having a specific gravity greater than that of water, is formed and sinks through the water. The mineral powder may be calcium carbonates, silicas, aluminium silicates, clays, dolomites, talc or barium sulphate and is rendered hydrophobic preferably with silicones or fatty acids having at least 12 carbon atoms.
