Abstract

1,192,001. Polyamide-acids. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 20 March, 1967 [30 March, 1966], No. 14078/66. Heading C3R. Polymers contain repeating units where R is a trivalent organic radical containing at least 3 carbon atoms and wherein the COOH and CO groups are attached in cyclic anhydride forming positions and the NH group is attached in a different position from either. R may be an aliphatic group in which the NH group is separated from the carbonyl groups by no more than 5 carbon atoms but is preferably aromatic, e.g. a benzene or naphthalene nucleus or such groups linked directly or through -O-, -S-, -SO 2 -, -CONH-, -CR<SP>1</SP>R<SP>11</SP>-, -(APh) n - A-, -NR<SP>111</SP>-, -SiO- -O(CH 2 ) n -O-, -CO.O- or -CO- where R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>11</SP> and R<SP>111</SP> are hydrocarbon groups or R or R<SP>1</SP> may be H, each A is independently -O-, -S-, -CONH- or -SO 2 - Ph is phenylene and n is an integer above 1. The aromatic rings may be substituted, e.g. by halogen, alkyl or alkoxy. The polymers may be prepared from the corresponding amino anhydride or mixtures thereof with one another and/or other polyimide or polyamide forming combinations (diamines and dianhydrides or diacids). Preferred aminohydrides containing the amino and anhydride groups on separate linked aromatic nuclei are described and claimed in Specification 1,192,002. The polyamide acid may be shaped, e.g. into filaments, fibres, coatings, moulding powder or films, under anhydrous conditions and converted by heat or chemical means to a polyimide. Alternatively aqueous solutions of ammonium or organic base salts of the polymers may be used for wire coating or film forming. In examples polymers are prepared from 4-(4<SP>1</SP>- aminophenoxy)-1,2-dicarboxy benzene anhydride and from 4-aminophthalic anhydride which in Example 6 is prepared in situ from 4- nitrophthalic anhydride. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 1,109,079, 1,109,080 and 1,155,541.
