[Also in Divisions F2 and H5] An apparatus for butt welding plastics pipes comprises a flat body 10 provided with an arrangement of slots 14, clipped bores 15 and electrical shunts 18 in its periphery to concentrate the heating current supplied to the body in certain parts thereof so that the heating surface defined thereby may have a uniform temperature. Thermally conductive bolts 16 with heat radiating fins 27 are provided to differentially cool the body, e.g. when subjected to a prevailing wind. Some heat dissipating bolts 17 are joined by copper conductors 18 to provide thermal and electrical shunts so that the body between the bolts 17 is not heated so much. As shown, the body is connected to a step-down transformer 12 by radially extending tabs 11 which are at least one fifth the length of the current path (i.e. the length is one fifth the mean circumference). The body 10 may be coated with a plastics and may be made of chromium-nickel-titanium steel. In Fig. 2 (not shown) a pair of strips bridged by an adjustable connector provide a current path in parallel with the cylindrical body, adjustment of the connector adjusting the flow of current in the body. In Fig. 3 (not shown) an apparatus for butt welding the longitudinally divided halves of a branched pipe comprises four rigid pieces, which are electrically connected and have the required heat pattern provided by the slots, bores, radiating bolts, and shunt paths, are joined by a system of lever whereby they can be adjusted to take varying sizes of pipe of the same shape. A thermocouple 20 controls the current supply.
