Abstract

[Also in Division Fl] In an apparatus for producing a substantially constant flow, e.g. to an hydraulic power steering mechanism of a motor vehicle, from a variable flow, e.g. from a pump 11 driven by the engine of the vehicle, a valve member 25 is arranged in the flow path 32, 33, 18 between the pump discharge 15 and the steering mechanism. The valve member is moved in accordance with the difference between the pressure at the upstream side of a convergent-divergent nozzle 41 and the pressure at the nozzle throat, to control the degree of opening of a by-pass port 17. The divergent portion of the nozzle has an included angle of approximately 14 degrees and is substantially longer, e.g. seven times longer, than the convergent portion. Preferably the latter has an included angle of approximately 60 degrees.
