Abstract
1,191,712. Jet deflection. GENERAL MOTORS CORP. 6 July, 1967 [15 Sept., 1966], No. 31104/67. Heading B7G. An aircraft jet engine comprises an exhaust duct 6 of circular or annular cross-section, a nozzle 8 having a pair substantially parallel side edges 11 with a transition section 13 between having turning means 17 to direct the engine exhaust outward sideways, a diverter means 14, 15 at each side of the nozzle movable to close and open the means 17, and deflector vanes 16, 18 at each edge 11 extending downstream of the nozzle, and hingeable about axes at the edges 11 to deflect the engine exhaust sideways. The engine may be mounted with its thrust axis vertical in a rectangular nacelle 30 having side doors 49 biased closed and a bottom door 37 hingeable about a front hinge 38 so that when half-way open it deflects the engine exhaust backwards.
