Abstract

1,191,483. Luminescent materials. SHER. WIN-WILLIAMS CO. 14 June, 1967 [17 June, 1966; 23 May, 1967], No. 27527/67. Heading C4S. A fluorescent pigment comprises silica gel particles the pores of which contain a 0À1 to 5.0% by weight solution of a fluorescent dye in an organic polymer solvent which at 25‹ C. is solid and non-volatile, the dye fluorescing in response to sunlight or artificial light having a similar spectrum including U.V. light. The pigment is prepared by dissolving the dye in a solvent containing the polymer and a volatile fraction, contacting the dye solution with silica gel particles and absorbing and concentrating the dye and polymer in pores of the particles by evaporating the volatile fraction. The term silica gel includes siliceous hydrogels, xerogels and aerogels containing up to 10% alumina or zirconia e.g. diatomaceous earths and talcs. Xanthene (rhodamine), ketone imine, acridine and naphthalimide type dyes are referred to. The polymer solvents include vinyl chloride, vinyl acetate copolymer, cellulose acetate, nitrocellulose, cellulose acetate butyrate, PVA, methyl cellulose, gum tragacanth, acrylic, alkyd and epoxy resins, polyurethanes and poly (vinyl formal). Volatile solvents include alcohols, ketones, esters, glycols, glycol esters and water. The silica gel particles may absorb before or during treatment with the dye solution, near white opaque pigment e.g. TiO 2 , fluorescent ZnS, lithopone and ZrO 2 ; optical brighteners e.g. benzoyl-aminostilbenes, benzimanazoles and amino-coumarones; U.V. absorbers e.g. benzophenones and benzotriazoles; surfactants, antioxidants, non-fluorescent and photochromic dyes. In one example a rhodamine dye is dissolved in vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymer with isophorone, cellusolve acetate and cyclohexanene volatile solvents. Silica gel particles are stirred into the solution to form a slurry which is then heated to remove the volatile solvents and deposit the dye and polymer solvent. The photochromic dyes are Hg, Zn and Pd salts of diphenylthiocarbazonates and may be absorbed by the particles directly or the diphenylthiocarbazonate is first absorbed and cation introduced subsequently. The pigment forms a paint when mixed with a vehicle of acrylic polymer, naphtha, oleic, linoleic, linoleic fatty acid, alkyd resin and mineral spirits: the vehicle may include toluene and xylene. For use in silk screen printing the pigment is mixed with styrene copolymer, linseed maleic ester resin, naphtha, ethyl cellulose and mineral spirits. A moulding material is prepared by mixing the pigment with vinyl chloride, and dioctyl phthalate. The pigment may also be used in inks, crayons, chalks, textile coatings and castings; advertising, safety and decorative applications are indicated.
