Abstract

119,136. Steinmetz, J. A. Nov. 1, 1917. Mines, marine.-Relates to bombs connected by a line to a float to explode the bomb when it sinks to a given depth under water for the destruction of submarine vessels. According to the invention, the line is arranged so that its length can be quickly varied, and means are added to explode the bomb by contact with the submarine vessel. As shown, the line H is connected to a spring- striker J on the bomb, so that the striker is cocked by the pull of the float I until a slip-lock joint K in the striker is withdrawn from its socket, when the striker is released and fires the bomb A. Lengths B, C, D, E of line are coiled around the bomb, and any of these may be added to the line H to vary the depth at which explosion shall take place. Devices D distinguishable by the eye or the hand are provided. on these lengths of line to indicate the corresponding depths. If the bomb strikes the submarine vessel before the appointed depth, explosion is caused by a pin P which is driven against a detonator Q by contact with the submarine vessel, the bomb being weighted at the end 0 where the pin P is, in order to ensure that the bomb shall sink with this end downwards. The pin P is normally protected by a screw cap T which is removed before the bomb is dropped. The float is normally slipped on the other end of the bomb and comes off when the bomb is dropped into the water.
