Abstract

1,191,022. Middle ear prosthesis. DOW CORNING CORP. 30 May, 1968 [5 July, 1967], No. 25886/68. Heading A5R. A prosthesis for insertion into the middle ear cavity, an embodiment of which is shown in Fig. 1 (side elevation) and Fig. 2 (back or bottom view), comprises an arcuate frame member 2 having a front and a back, a film or diaphragm 3 which is substantially circular and is mounted in relatively taut engagement across the front of the frame member, and an elongated member (or columella) 5 extending from the film (or diaphragm) in the direction of the back of the frame member and beyond. The front or top surface of the film (or diaphragm) can be smooth or ridged. An inert thread may be woven through the film so that small loops or stitches thereof can provide sites for attachment of the ear drum membrane. The columella can be provided with a wire core to increase its rigidity. The frame member, film (or diaphragm) and columella may all be formed from an inert plastics mateerial, e.g. silicone rubber, polyester or polyolefin, and the inert thread (where used) may be of stainless steel, platinum or polyester resin.
