Abstract

1,190,879. Collagen. CENTRE TECHNIQUE DU CUIR. 25 Oct., 1968 [1 Dec., 1967], No. 50813/68. Heading C3H. A process for the preparation and conditioning of proteinic pastes, dispersions and gels of animal origin comprises effecting on the previously ground fibrous raw material a mechanical action by malaxation or otherwise, treating this raw material simultaneously with malaxation by means of an acid chemical agent comprising a chlorinated organic acid, the temperature of treatment not exceeding 32‹ C., diluting the so-obtained paste either with water, adjusting the acid content between 0À01 and 0À1M and the pH between 2À5 and 4À5, or with a dilute acid solution of which the concentration and pH have been previously adjusted to these values, the temperature never exceeding 32‹ C. The raw material may be skins. Acids exemplified are chloracetic, chloropropionic, dichloracetic and trichloracetic acids. A prior treatment to reduce the molecular weight by splitting some of the proteins to peptides may comprise the use of alkali or of an enzyme which attacks keratin and elastin but has little effect on collagen, or the use of a lyotropic agent such as calcium, barium, strontium, magnesium, zinc or lithium chloride or lithium bromide.
