Abstract

1,190,323. Automatic temperature control systems. POTTERTON INTERNATIONAL Ltd. Feb.7, 1969 [Feb.12, 1968], No.6775/68. Heading G3R. An electrical storage heater having fan forced air circulation has an air control valve motivated by an electrical means controlled by a temperature sensing device situated downstream of the valve which admits diluent cool air into air previously heated by the heater. Heated air may be supplied to a plurality of rooms through a ducting system. The arrangement may be controlled by a time switch 36 which when operative completes a circuit through a manual reset excess temperature cut-out 38 through a bi-metallic temperature sensitive device TS and a valve motivating means TM. A circuit is also completed through a motor cut-out 39, fan motor windings and a manually or time switch shuntable resistor R1-to increase the fan speed when required. The time switch may also incorporate a room air temperature thermostat 37. An alternative or additional method of boosting the thermal output of the heater comprises a pair of normally open contacts 40, a two position switch S2, resistors R2, R3, and a cam 42 driven by manually operable time delay means (not shown) which closes contacts 40 for a selectable period of time e. g. up to 15 mins. The resistors R2, R3 provide different degrees of boost. In another alternative method of providing boost, an additional heater winding (not shown) connected to a supply via a time delay means of a type described above is provided on bi-metallic strip 29. The means TM is coupled to the valve 19 by a simple link (31) see Fig.3 (not shown) which may incorporate a lost motion coupling to avoid overstressing of the bi-metallic strip. The arrangement is designed so that initially, means TM closes the valve 19 but alternatively it may be arranged to be moved to the fully open position. Device TS may be provided with a mechanical or magnetic snap action arrangement to minimise arcing.
