Abstract

A universal joint for a conveyer chain comprises a U-shaped member 10 the base portion 13 of which is adapted to journal one of a pair of pivot pins either directly (Fig. 3) or indirectly via a liner 21 (Fig. 1), and a member 14 of C- shaped cross-section serving to journal the other of the pins extends transversely through the limbs 11, 12 of the member 10 and is secured thereto, e.g. by welding. The member 14 may be formed by milling a slot in a tube (Fig. 1) or by folding a flat plate (Fig. 3), and the bores in the limbs 11, 12 may have shaped lugs (22), (Figs. 2, 8, not shown) which engage in the slot of member 14. Where no liner 15 is used the first pin may be restrained laterally by split pins 25 or by the longitudinal edges of the member 14. The bearing surfaces for the pins are provided by a sprayed-on layer of molybdenum and bronze.
