Abstract

1,189,943. Ejecting inflammable liquids from containers with foam. WALTER KIDDE CO. Ltd. 15 Jan., 1969 [15 Jan., 1968], No. 2209/68. Heading A5A. [Also in Division F1] Inflammable liquid, e.g. oil, is discharged from a container 1, e.g. a tanker, by injecting high expansion foam from a generator 6 and then pressurising the container to force the liquid through an outlet 5. Pressurising may be effected by continuously injecting foam, or by supplying pressurised air or gas, eg car- 'bon dioxide. The pressurised air or gas may be supplied by the foam generator, by shutting-off the supply of foaming agent after a blanket of foam has been formed on the surface of the liquid. Alternatively, pressurised air may be supplied by a fan to a separate inlet, Fig. 2 (not shown). The foam generator has a fan 11 supplying air, and a nozzle 8 supplying foaming agent. A throttle 13 in the air passage 10 regulates the air flow under the control of pressure sensors 14 and 15 upstream and downstream of a mesh 7, to maintain a constant pressure differential across mesh 7. Throttle 13 may be controlled electrically, pneumatically or hydraulically.
