Abstract

1,189,906. Packaging-machines. HAYSSEN MFG. CO. 9 Oct., 1967, No. 46124/67. Heading B8C. In a vertical form-and-fill type packaging machine in which sealed packages are formed successively from a single continuous web tubed about a filling pipe, a driving wheel has an eccentrically mounted cam roller coupled to a slotted yoke for vertically reciprocating the transverse sealing mechanism. A duplex machine may have a single drive mechanism. Material from two coaxially mounted rolls 70, Fig. 2, and (70<SP>1</SP>), Fig. 3 (not shown), is formed simultaneously into two separate tubes 98, 98<SP>1</SP>. Each sheet 72 of material is fed by a roller mechanism 66 to a pair of folding plates 36 and wrapped about a forming and filling cylinder 28. The tubes 98, 98<SP>1</SP> thus formed are sealed longitudinally by reciprocating sealers 40, filled with a product 94 from a hopper 22, and sealed and cut by mechanism 52 to form packages 97. The sealing mechanism 52, shafts 44 and slotted yoke 54 together constitute a carriage 55 and are moved vertically as a unit by drive means coinprising cam roller 58 which moves along slot 56 in yoke 54 and is mounted on and driven by a continuously rotating drive wheel 60. The extent of travel of the carriage 55 may be varied for various package lengths by adjusting a bolt to alter the eccentricity of cam roller 58. A lead counter-weight 172 is disposed on wheel 60 radially opposite to roller 58. The tubes 98, 981 are drawn downwards by sealing mechanism 52. Cutters 150 are driven by air pistons 152 to separate a formed package. Predetermined quantities of product 94 may be discharged into each tube, or continuous feeding may be used for some products, the sealing jaws then pressing the product clear of the seal area. The sealing jaws 146 are opened by an air piston 132 just before the end of the downstroke, and hence the tubes 98, 98<SP>1</SP> remain stationary and are longitudinally heat-sealed by electrical sealers 40, mounted on frame 38 which is movable about a hinga by an arm 42a, see also Fig. 5 (not shown). The web-feed mechanism 66 comprises a floating roller 82, Fig. 2, which is raised by the action of drawing off material 72 and so triggers a switch 88 causing a motor to drive roller 76 and deliver a predetermined length of material until the roller 82 falls again. In use, the drive may be continuous since roller 82 may not have time to fall before the next cycle begins. A photo-cell 101 may be arranged to detect a printed design on the material 72 and adjust the feed by causing premature opening of the jaws 146.
