Abstract

1,188,642. Silica coatings. COURTAULDS Ltd. 9 May, 1967 [9 Feb., 1966], No. 5622/66. Headings B2E and B2K. The water-wettability of a surface of a polyolefin article is increased by subjecting the surface to a high frequency electric discharge and then applying a liquid dispersion of a silica particle, which bear an electric charge of opposite sign to that of the electric charge borne by the surface of the article. The article may be made of polyethylene and may be tubing, and only the outer surface is coated. The liquid dispersion of silica may be applied by immersing the surface in a bath. The surplus silica may be removed by washing or when the article is in sheet-like form by passing the article between squeeze rollers. A wetting agent may be incorporated in the liquid dispersion of the silica.
