Abstract
1,188,599. Wear-compensated joints. MOOG, INDUSTRIES, Inc. 18 March, 1968, No. 13088/68. Heading E2F. A self-adjusting, . wear-compensated joint comprises a housing 15 for a stud 21 with an axial extension 25 carrying projecting arms 26 which act on inward projections 34 on the ring 31 threaded in an outer ring 30 and forming an abutment for the upper surface of the stud at surface 39. If slack develops at this surface, rotation of the stud in one direction causes the ring 31 to rotate so that it moves towards the stud on its thread and takes up the slack. Overtightening is avoided by selecting the stiffness of the projections 34 and associated "stiffeners" 35 so that they bend away from arms 26 when the frictional force between the stud and surface 39 reaches the required level. Movement of the ring 31 in the reverse direction with consequent slackening of the joint does not occur since the stiffeners 35 do not act on projections 34 which thus move out of engagement with arms 26 under conditions of lower friction. Other embodiments operating on the same principal are described with reference to Figs. 4-11 (not shown).
