Abstract

1,188,407. Covering cores. NEE & McNULTY Inc. 16 June, 1967, No. 27984/67. Heading B8G. [Also in Division F2j A method of wrapping cylindrically-shaped body, e.g. a cable or conduit 4, covered with hot applied coating 2, e.g. of microcrystalline wax, coal tar, or asphalt, comprises affixing the free end of an unsupported layer 12 of sheetlike thermoplastics resin film, e.g. polyethylene wrapper material of about 3 to 10 mils. thickness, to the coated surface of the conduit 4 and spirally wrapping the conduit with the film under tension while the temperature of that portion of the coating 2 as it is contacted by the film ranges from the stretch point to the softening point of the film. The expressions stretch and softening points are defined in the Specification. As shown, a microcrystalline wax 2, having a melting point of 165‹ F., is sprayed on to a pipeline 4 at a temperature of approximately 275‹ F. by means of a conventional combination line travelling, cleaning, coating and wrapping machine 6. Two layers, e.g. of polyethylene or polypropylene, from about 3 to 10 mils. thick, mounted on spools 16 with brake tensioning control knobs 14, are wrapped with overlap, at high speed as a wrapping head 10 rotates, to conform readily to any irregularities on the surface of the coating 2, the speed of the operation being regulated so that the coating 2 is cooled to the correct range of temperatures before it is contacted by the layers 12.
