Abstract

1,188,213. Resistors. POWER DEVELOPMENT Ltd. 14 June, 1968 [17 March, 1967], No. 12683/67. Headings H1K and H1S. A method of producing a resistor which may be non-linear comprises the steps of shaping and firing a mass of resistor material e.g. silicon carbide, to form a resistor body and spraying its surface with an insulating coating material comprising a refractory-metal oxide applied in a non-aqueous fluid medium or by flame spraying and heat treating the coated body to form a hard coating layer firmly bonded to the surface of the body. The coating may be from 0À002_ to 0À020_ inch thick. Coating materials include alumina or metal oxides mixed with binding agents such as sodium silicate, potassium silicate or aluminium phosphate; or alkyd resin or polyurethanebased paints. Binding agents used with the above include shellac, tragacanth and linseed oil. Silicone varnishes, containing 10% to 30% by weight of refractory metal oxides may be used for coatings. Spraying methods include air and airless spraying, electrostatic spraying, flock and powder spraying or flame spraying. An alumina coating may be further coated by a ceramic glaze enamel or frit. Several sucessive layers of coating material may be built up. Terminals may be produced by metallizing e.g. with brass, copper, nickel or nickel alloy end areas of the body not otherwise coated.
