Abstract

118,740. Gebhart, J. C. Nov. 12. 1917. Measuring.-In machines for measuring fabrics and for computing the price thereof, of the kind wherein the measuring and price-computing operations are due to the passage of the cloth between rollers, the upper and lower rollers are arranged in the central longitudinal plane of the machine, and a combined length-measuring and price-computing chart, driven from the rear end of the upper roller, is arranged symmetrically of the central longitudinal plane of the machine and above the upper roller. Supplementary length-indicating means driven from the front end of the upper roller may be provided, together with improved means for slitting or marking the fabric as an indication of the line along which it is to be torn, for separating the rollers for the insertion of the fabric, and for zeroizing the length and price indicators. The edge of the fabric to be measured is passed through a slot in the casing of the machine between an upper roller 2, Fig. 2, and a lower roller 3 mounted on a spring-controlled yoke 8 pivoted to the casing. The yoke is lowered for the insertion of the fabric bv means of an arm 59, Fig. 3, mounted on the spindle of a handlever 66, and is held in this position until released from a spring catch controlled by a hand-operated stem 63. The fabric is slit by a blade 65 operated from a lever 67 and coacting with a fixed blade 64. In order that the levers 66, 67 may not be operated simultaneously, they are arranged to operate cam-pieces 75, between which is mounted a T-shaped lever 79 adapted to lock either campiece and its corresponding lever upon the operation of the other. A .drum 15, having a pricevalue chart 16, Fig. 14, and a length-indicating scale 18, is driven from the rear end of the upper roller 2, Fig. 2, through clutch members 46, 47, the member 47 being integral with a worm-wheel 24 loose on the shaft 19 of the drum and driven through a worm 29 by bevel-gearing from the roller 2. The clutch member 46 is slidable on a projection 48 on the drum and has arms 49 engaging recesses in the end of the drum. Upon the operation of a knob 55, a stem carrying a pin 53 sliding in a slot in the shaft 19 moves the clutch member 46 out of engagement with the member 47, and a spring 20 rotates the drum to its zero position, a projection 21 on the drum engaging a fixed stop 22. A length-unit indicating wheel 92, Fig. 14, and a fractional pointer 89 are operated from the front end of the upper roller 2, and are zeroized simultaneously with the drum 15. The fractional pointer 89, Fig. 17, is driven through clutch members 106, 105, the member 105 being integral with a spur-wheel 104 driven through gearing from a bevel-wheel 98 on the shaft 2. The spindle 95 on which the pointer 89 is mounted carries an arm 110 adapted, at each revolution of the pointer, to engage a tooth on a wheel 108 mounted on the same shaft as the units-indicating wheel 92, the wheel being held after each partial revolution by a spring catch engaging peripheral teeth in the wheel 108. Upon the operation of the knob 55 for zeroizing the drum 15, lever mechanism is operated to raise the spring catch out of engagement with the wheel 108, so that the wheel is brought to zero through a spring 126. At the same time, a pin 113 slidable in the spindle of the pointer 89 is raised to disengage the clutch member 106 from the member 105, so that the pointer is returned to zero within a single, revolution through the influence of a spring 119 acting on a friction clutch member 117, which is permanently in engagement with a clutch member 116 fast on the spindle of the pointer, the zero position of the pointer being determined by a spring catch adapted to. engage a single tooth on the clutch member 116.
