Abstract
1,187,376. Mass spectrometers. VARIAN MAT G.m.b.H. 11 April, 1967 [30 April, 1966], No. 16590/67. Addition to 1,052.902. Heading H1D. In a field-ionization source for a mass spectrometer comprising a wire-shaped emitter with an elongated arched emission surface, provision is made for heating the emitter in order to destroy layers of condensate formed on the surface of the wire and so to reduce the occurrence of fragment ions in the mass spectrum. The wire may be heated by passing an adjustable direct current, of, e.g., 0À85 mA, through it or by irradiaticn. A Wollaston wire of 2À5 Á diameter and 5 mm. free length is used. The general source arrangement is as shown in the parent Specification.
