Abstract

1,187,338. Spray carburetters. TECUMSEH PRODUCTS CO. Oct.30, 1968 [Oct.31, 1967], No.51361/68. Heading FiB. An internal combustion engine comprises a carburetter having a throttle valve, priming means adapted to be actuated by a pulse of air pressure, and control means comprising a shaft having an axial bore and rotatably mounted in a support, a control knob being mounted at one end of the shaft. A flexible squeeze bulb is mounted on the knob, the hollow interior of the bulb communicating with the bore in the shaft, a flexible conduit being connected at one end to the end of the shaft remote from the control knob and at the other end to the carburetter priming means. The position of the throttle valve is controlled by the control knob through the shaft and linkage. The engine shown is a two-stroke single cylinder engine with its crankshaft vertically disposed, being shown as the drive unit of a lawn mower 12. A shroud 18 is disposed around the engine flywheel and a C-shaped bracket 30 is secured thereto, a shaft 20 formed with a through-bore 60 being rotatably mounted at 22, 24 in the flanges 26, 28 of the bracket. A control knob 34 is secured to the upper end of the shaft and comprises a detent 40 which engages in pockets 42, 44, 46, 48, 50 formed in the flange 26, the shaft being resiliently loaded by a coil spring 100. A squeeze bulb 62 is secured to the control knob. A flexible conduit 70 is secured to the shaft 20 by means of an adapter 68, the conduit being connected to a chamber 82 below a diaphragm 84, the upper side of the diaphragm defining a priming fuel chamber 80 of the carburetter 16. When the bulb is squeezed the air pressure in chamber 82 moves the diaphragm upwardly thus opening valve 126 and allowing fuel from line 128 to pass through metering orifice 134, past ball valve 136 to the carburetter throat; at the same time the check valve 130 is momentarily closed. The control shaft 20 is connected through linkage 90, 102 to a lever 104 pivotally mounted at 106, the end 110 of the lever moving between the positions shown in full and chain-dotted lines, the former being the "stop" position in which the ignition circuit is earthed through contact 105, and the latter being the "start" position in which the lever engages an abutment 112 to rotate the shaft 114 of the choke. The throttle valve shaft 116 is connected by means of a spring 120 to a lever 122 which moves with the lever 104, the throttle valve shaft being controlled by a governor vane 118 against the loading of the spring. The control knob has a pointer 52 which co-operates with an indicator 54, the detent engaging corresponding pockets 42, 44, 46, 48, 50.
