Abstract

1,187,318. Seaming non-metallic sheet material. SCAPA DRYERS Ltd. 4 Nov., 1968 [12 July, 1968], No. 33441/68. Heading B5K. A pintle wire unit, Fig. 4, for a clipper seam in a paper maker's dryer felt comprises two sideby-side pintle wires 11, a lead-in wire 16 arranged in end-to-end disposition relative to the wires 11, and a coupling 15 to secure the wires 11, 16 together. The wires 11 are of circular cross-section and are preferably made of plastics material and of the construction described in Specification 997,354. The wire 16 is of rectangular crosssection with a rounded-off or pointed leading end and is made of hardened and tempered spring steel. The coupling 15 preferably comprises a tubular sheath of metal or plastics material and the wires 11, 16 are retained therein by adhesive or by crimping the sheath on to the wires. Alternatively, the sheath 15 is formed by moulding resinous material about the abutted wire ends. The pintle wire unit is supplied wound on to a drum enclosed in a cardboard box and is manually drawn out of the box through a hole therein. In use, the leading end of the wire 16 is inserted through interleaved clips on the felt ends and the protruding end thereof, Fig. 8 (not shown), is seized by clamps or pliers and pulled right through the seam so that the wires 11 only remain in the seam. The wire 16 and the sheath 15 are cut away and the protruding ends of the wires 11 are secured by bending, Fig. 10. The wire clips may be clenched in the selvedge of narrow tapered webbing sewn to the ends of the felt, Fig. 1 (not shown), or directly in the stiffened ends of the felt, Fig. 2 (not shown), in the latter case a thin trailing flap (14) being provided.
