Abstract

Apparatus for measuring the instantaneous power transmitted by a rotable shaft A-A comprises three devices, the first device 1 measuring the instantaneous torque exerted by the shaft, the second device 2 measuring the instantaneous speed of rotation of the shaft and the third device Fig.3 combining the measurements of the first and second devices to provide an indication of the instantaneous power transmitted by the shaft. The torque measuring device 1 comprises three shaft portions 5, 6, 7 arranged in a gap in the shaft A-A in such a way that the portions 6, 7 are attached to the shaft A-A and the portion 5 is slideable in the portion 6. The slideable portion 5 is so provided with ball bearings 11 which are urged by a spring into engagement with a cammed surface 10 provided on a cylindrical member 8 attached to the shaft portion 7 that, according to the torque of the shaft, the ball bearings 11 ride up the cammed surface 10 against the bias of the spring 13 so as to move the portion 5 relative to the portion 6 in accordance with the torque. The speed measuring device 2 comprises a frame 19 provided with cammed surfaces 22 and arranged through bevel gears 20, 21 to rotate at a speed proportional to the speed of the shaft, weights 23, 24 being arranged, due to centrifugal force, to urge a rod 25 against the bias of a spring 26 whereby the rod 25 moves by an amount proportional to the speed. The two devices 1, 2 are arranged to move a member 39 Fig.3 into a liquid filled enclosure by an amount proportional to the product of torque and speed so as to provide a power reading on a linear scale 44 arranged alongside a tube 43 containing the liquid.
