Abstract
1,186,995. L-Glutamic acid by fermentation. KYOWA HAKKO KOGYO CO. Ltd. 10 April, 1968 [9 May, 1967], No. 17334/68. Heading C2C. L-Glutamic acid is produced by culturing a hydrocarbon-assimilating micro-organism capable of producing it, in an aqueous nutrient medium under aerobic conditions and utilizing a gaseous hydrocarbon as the main carbon source and in the presence of at least one additive selected from antibiotics except penicillin, surface active agents, fatty acids and fatty acid esters having 5 to 8 carbon atoms in the acid moiety and alcohols. Specified microorganisms are Brevibacterium ketoglutamicum spp. ATCC 15587 and 15588, Arthrobacter roseoparaffineus ATCC 15584, and Micrococcus paraffinolyticus ATCC 15582, and the preferred hydrocarbon is n-butane. Suitable antibiotics are keflin, ceporan, bacitracin, novobiocin, kanamycin, streptomycin, cycloserine and spiromycin, and surface active agents are preferably cationic or non-ionic agents, including the sodium salts of high molecular weight alkyl sulphates or sulphonates, polyoxyethylene glycol derivatives, fatty acids and sucrose fatty acid esters. The additive may be present initially or is added (all at once or intermittently) during cultivation, the concentration being preferably from 5-50,000 γ/ml.
