1,186,900. Catalyst treatment. CHEMISCHE WERKE HœLS A.G. 3 Aug., 1967 [4 Aug., 1966], No. 35737/67. Heading C3P. Alpha-olefins are polymerized using a catalyst comprising (a) a hydride or organic compound of metals of groups I A , II A and IIIB of the Mendeleeff Periodic System and (b) a compound of a transition metal of groups IVA, V A , VIA and VIII of the Mendeleeff Periodic System wherein the particles of component (b) are reduced in size, in the presence of (a), by the action of a mechanically produced high-frequency vibrational field of 15 kilocycles to 5 megacycles per second, for 0À3 second to 60 minutes. Another organometallic compound may be added to the catalyst suspension produced under the action of the vibrational field. The vibrational field may be obtained by the action of a mechanical kinematic high-frequency generator. In the examples, an ethylene-butylene copolymer, and an ethylene homopolymer, are each prepared using a catalyst consisting of a mixture of dipropoxy titanium dichloride and ethyl aluminium sesqui-chloride which have been treated in a high-frequency generator. In the ethylene homopolymerization, triethyl aluminium is added to the treated catalyst mixture. The polymer products are worked up with methanol, followed by centrifuging and drying.
