[Also in Divisions E2 and F2] A method of securing a flexible protective cover 18 to the socket 10 of a ball joint comprises positioning the cover so that a portion 23 thereof surrounds a circumferential surface 17 on the socket, positioning a circular metal ring 25 over the portion 23 and applying a radially inward pressure to the ring 25 at spaced positions about its periphery by means of a series of radially inwardly movable die segments 27 each having a rib 28 mounted on a concave end face 27A.
