Abstract

1,186,722. Diaphragms. NIPPON GAKKI CO. Ltd. 9 March, 1967 [6 April, 1966; 19 April, 1966; 3 May, 1966; 7 July, 1966], No. 11216/67. Heading H4J. A flat-plate type diaphragm for a loud-speaker is of conical form at the area to be driven by the driving means and composed of foamed resin material. The diaphragm is designed so as to reduce secondary and tertiary vibration modes. In an arrangement, Fig. 3, the diaphragm 2 is of foamed polystyrene, polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene, polyamide, polyurethane or ABS or other foamed resin &c., and is mounted in a frame with the driving means at the centre. Unwanted vibrations are reduced by radial riblike parts which may be straight or curved, and marginal areas arranged as a continuous or discontinuous zone around the edge of the diaphragm and made of lossy resinous material. The rib-like parts may be of the above-mentioned materials and may be formed on both sides of the diaphragm. (In the case of identical material for diaphragm and ribs, the whole is moulded as an integral unit.) Alternatively, the ribs are of aluminium foil or paper. Instead of ribs, reinforced regions comprising thermosetting resin may be mixed with the material of the diaphragm. For the marginal areas, regions of high absorption for vibrational energy are provided by applying a layer of thermoplastic resin to the surface or mixing it with the material of the diaphragm. Figs. 4-6 (not shown), illustrate an arrangement of a diaphragm of trapezoidal shape having two strengthening ribs which are used to suppress the tertiary vibration mode. Figs. 7-11 (not shown) illustrate a moving coil loud-speaker of deformed oval shape. This has curved radial damping ribs, which may be moulded with the diaphragm or be attached as strips of aluminium foil, paper &c. The diaphragm is screwed to the frame holding the driving means.
