[Also in Division D1] A clear product is obtained by heating together i.p.o. a C 1-4 saturated monohydric alcohol a methylol compound of an aminoplast-forming nitrogen compound with 0À5-10 moles of a dicarboxylic anhydride and 0À75-10 moles of an aliphatic C 8 -plus monohydric alcohol per mole of methylol compound. The methylol compound may be derived from melamine, urea, ethyleneurea, propyleneurea, hydroxypropyleneurea or acetyleneurea and may be partially etherified with a C 1-4 alkanol. Suitable anhydrides are those of C 4-10 aliphatic dicarboxylic acids, phthalic acid or naphthalic acid. The C 8 -plus alcohol is preferably saturated, having 16, 17 or 18 C atoms. An optional component is 0À2-0À6 moles per mole of methylol compound of a C 16 - plus aliphatic monocarboxylic acid. The reaction may be conducted by heating the reactants in 10 times their weight of the solvent alcohol until the mixture becomes clear, then distilling off the alcohol and heating the mixture at 160-180‹ C. The products may be dissolved in a hydrocarbon or chlorinated hydrocarbon to give a solution suitable for the " dry " impregnation of a textile material. This solution may also contain a water repellant material, e.g. a wax in amount 50-150 wt. per cent of the product, and 5-15 g.p.1. of an alcoholate of Al, Zr or, Ti with a saturated C 1-4 alkanol. In examples methylol derivatives, which may be partly methylated or ethylated, of melamine or urea or ethyleneurea are heated in methanol, or isopropanol with phthalic or maleic or succinic anhydride and dodecanol or hexadecanol or octadecanol and optionally with stearic, palmitic or cerotic acid to give products which are further heated, and on cooling prove to be soluble in perchlorethylene, trichlorethylene, and in hydrocarbons and chlorinated hydrocarbons in general.
