Abstract
A base for a coating composition is made by condensing (1) 20 to 35 per cent by weight of an alcohol-modified polymethylol N,N-dialkyl melamine obtained by reacting 1 mol. of an N,Ndialkyl melamine in which the alkyl groups are methyl, ethyl, n-propyl, isopropyl, n-butyl or sbutyl groups, at least 4 mols. of formaldehyde and at least 5 mols. of n-propanol, n-butanol, or s-butanol with (2) 80 to 65 per cent by weight of an oil-modified alkyd resin. Curing catalysts for the composition are strong organic acids, e.g. p-toluene sulphonic acid, ethane sulphonic acid, trifluor acetic acid and heptafluoro butyric acid. The alkyd resins are made by condensing a dicarboxylic acid, e.g. phthalic, succinic or adipic acid, if desired, in the presence of maleic acid with polyhydric alcohols comprising at least 25 per cent by weight of at least one alcohol containing at least 3 hydroxyl groups, e.g. glycerol, pentaerythritol, sorbitol or inositol and up to 75 per cent by weight of a dihydric alcohol, e.g. ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol, propylene glycol, dipropylene glycol and trimethylene glycol. The alkyds are modified with fatty acids, many of which are specified, examples being lauric acid, myristic acid and coconut oil fatty acids. In examples, a condensate from n-butanol, dimethyl melamine and formaldehyde was discharged into a reaction vessel with (a) a toluene solution of an alkyd resin derived from phthalic acid, glycerol and coconut oil fatty acids; (b) a xylene solution of an alkyd resin derived from phthalic acid, stearic acid, propylene glycol and pentaerythritol. In each example, a solution of p-toluene sulphonic acid in isopropanol was added, the composition applied to chipboard and cured at 250 DEG F. The composition may be applied to many substrates, e.g. wood, metal, glass leather, "Cellophane" (Registered Trade Mark), films and sheets of plastic materials such as nylon, polymethacrylates and polyacrylates, textiles, paper and cardboard.
