Abstract
1,186,454. Electrodes for use in aqueous alkali metal chloride electrolytes. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Oct.16, 1968 [Nov.10, 1967], No.51219/67. Heading C7B. In the manufacture of an electrode comprising "a titanium support" and an electro-deposited coating of "a platinum metal" thereon, at least the outermost layer of the platinum metal coating is electro-deposited from a plating bath which contains an admixture of an aliphatic polybasic hydroxy acid, e.g. citric acid. "A titanium support" means a support consisting of Ti alone or an alloy based on Ti and having anodic polarization properties similar to those of Ti. Examples of suitable Ti alloys are Ti with Zr, Pt, Rh, Ir, Nb or Ta. "A platinum metal" means Ru, Rh, Pd, Os, Ir, Pt or an alloy of at least two of these metals. The titanium support may be electroplated with a platinum metal from a conventional bath before being electro-plated using the bath containing the admixture. Electrodes produced by the process may be employed as anodes in electrolytic cells wherein Cl 2 , hypochlorites or chlorates are produced by the electrolysis of alkali metal chloride solutions, as anodes in cells for the electro-dialysis of brackish water and as anodes for the cathodic protection of iron and steel structures immersed in sea water. In an example, a sheet of Ti is etched in HC1 and then electroplated with Pt from a bath containing HC1, chloroplatinic acid and citric acid using a current density of 0À3 A/dm<SP>2</SP> and a bath temperature of 70‹C. During plating, the Ti sheet is moved in a circular path within the bath.
