Abstract

1,186,346. Fuel elements. UNITED KING- DOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. 9 May, 1967 [27 April, 1966], No. 18533/66. Heading G6C. A fuel element comprises a cluster of parallel, spaced fuel rods secured at one end to a support grid bearing the weight of the fuel rods, the securing of the fuel rods to the support grid being releasably effected by the deformation of a part of the support grid into engagement with an end portion of each fuel rod, whereby the fuel rods are restrained against axial movement relative to the support grid. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 2, a top support grid 18 has each of its cells 19 formed with an inturned continuous annular lip 21 at its lower end and eight hook-shaped tabs 22 separated by dots 23 at its upper end. Initially, the internal diameter measured across the outer edges of the tabs 22 is not less than that of the cylindrical portion 20 of the cell 19. Each fuel rod 24 has a tubular sheath 25 with circumferential or helical external fins 26, and an upper end portion 27 of enlarged diameter which terminates short of the extreme upper edge of the sheath 25. Interposed between the end cap 30 and the top fuel pellet 29 is a heat-insulating pellet 31 (e.g. alumina). The fuel rod 24 is fitted to the grid 18 from above and is moved downwardly until the lip 21 engages the shoulder 28 formed by the lower edge of the upper end portion 27. The tabs 22 are then deformed inwardly so that their upper edges meet circumferentially and enclose and contact the welded upper end 32 of the fuel rod, thereby preventing any significant upward axial movement of the fuel rod relative to the support grid.
