Abstract

1,186,301. Rear suspensions. VAUXHALL MOTORS Ltd. 12 Dec., 1968 [1 Feb., 1968], No. 5231/68. Heading B7D. A rigid rear axle suspension system comprises a pair of separate suspension arms 16 connected, pivotally at their front ends and resiliently through one or more springs 22 at their rear ends, to the vehicle body, the axle 10 being resiliently connected at its ends to the arms such that the front and rear connections of the arms are disposed respectively in front of and behind the outer peripheries of the wheels 12. Torque reaction on the axle is afforded by resilient pads 40, 42 which are attached to brackets 36, 37 carried by the arms 16 and which abut co-operating faces on the axle brackets 14. A Panhard rod 28 is connected between the axle, which may be live, and the vehicle body. The rear springs may comprise a helical spring 22 mounted on each arm. Vibration dampers 24, which may be lever type or telescopic and may be coaxial or otherwise with the springs are included. Alternatively, the springs may comprise longitudinal or tranverse torsion bars or quarter elliptic springs connected to the arms 16 through links or a single transverse semielliptic spring may be connected to both arms and to the vehicle The quarter elliptic springs and the suspension arms 16 may be disposed obliquely.
