Abstract

1,185,844. 2<SP>1</SP>,3<SP>1</SP>-α-Tetrahydrofuran-2<SP>1</SP>-spiro- 17-androstene compounds, MERCK & CO. Inc. 8 Aug., 1967, No. 36416/67. Heading C2U. The overall process disclosed is the same as that disclosed in Specification 1,154,414, but the claims are directed to the preparation of 2<SP>1</SP>,3<SP>1</SP>α-tetrahydrofuran-2<SP>1</SP>-spiro-17- (4-androsten- 3-one) by the oxidation of a 2<SP>1</SP>,3<SP>1</SP>α-tetrahydrofuran - 2<SP>1</SP> - spiro - 17 - (3# - alkyl or aryl sulphonyloxy - 5 - androstene) with dimethylsulphoxide in the presence of a mild base, the starting material being prepared from the corresponding 3#-ol and an appropriate sulphonyl halide in an organic base.
