Abstract
1,185,790. Vapour deposition of silicon oxides. FARBENFABRIKEN BAYER A. G. Aug. 5, 1968 [Aug.3, 1967], No.37173/68. Addition to 1,144,099. Heading C7F. Synthetic resins are coated with SiO x (x = 1-2) to a thickness of 2-5Á by evaporating a mixture of 95-98À5% SiO 2 and 5-1À5% of at least one oxide of Zn, Zr, Sb, Cr by an electron beam source at an energy density of 5-15 KW/sq. cm. and an effective evaporating surface of 0À3-0À6 sq. cm. at a partial pressure of SiO x of at least 1 x 10<SP>-2</SP> mm. Hg, the object to be coated or the electron beam vaporizer being moved during deposition so that at least 40 successive layers are deposited at a mean condensation rate of SiO x of 90-110A‹/sec. The resin may be electrostatically discharged prior to deposition which is carried out at 10<SP>-4</SP> to 10<SP>-6</SP> mm. Hg and optionally in the prescence of oxygen. Suitable resins are:- terephthalic acid ethylene glycol polyester; polycarbonates; linear thermoplastic polyarylene polyethers; cross linked materials such as epoxide resins hardened by acid anhydrides or amines, and polymeric diethylene glycol-bis-alkyl carbonate. The substrate may be the solid resin or any material coated with lacquer films such as polyurethane, lacquers, nicinene/ alkyd resin/aminoplast lacquers, epoxide resin, melamine resin and isocyanate, silicone resin, expoxy esters, cyclized rubber and acrylic resin.
